SC, NC, TN, VA September 2011

Before I shipped over to Afghanistan I took a little road trip. I visited family and relaxed way out in the country. A very stark contrast to where I am now in Afghanistan. I drove up to Greenville, SC from Cocoa, FL. I had never been to Greenville and was pleasantly surprised. I ate at The Lazy Goat which was very good. I then took a walk along the river part of the Swamp Rabbit Trail. It's quite a nice city with a great park right in downtown.

After South Carolina I headed up to Asheville, NC to visit my dad. I have been there several times and didn't take many pictures. See my previous post for more info on Asheville.

I spent the majority of the trip in Virginia. I drove up from North Carolina on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was a very nice drive. I stopped off to visit several places along the way. The highlight of the trip was Floyd Virginia. It has to be one of the most diverse small towns in the United States. They have a huge bluegrass following but you will also find hipsters at the Dogtown Roadhouse listening to live Indy Rock. If you are ever up that way the Floyd Country Store is a must stop. Try to make their Friday night bluegrass jam and dance.

My final stop before heading home was Shenandoah National Park. Unfortunately it rained the entire time I was up there. Visibility was also poor due to the heavy fog. I made the best of it and will head back up there one day.
